The market was important in the Middle Ages when this area was the heart of the town. It drew in ~ and still does to a certain extent ~ a wide range of people taking advantage of its shopping streets and other commerce.

The cockfighting pit is long gone however as is its 1762 Market Cross removed in 1881.
