![]() | William Ewart Gladstone's bust in the keystone of the hall door celebrates a great Liberal statesman who's career in the Commons lasted from 1832, just after the repeal of the Corn Laws, to his defeat on the Irish Home Rule bill 1893. In 1894 he resigned and died in 1898. He was best known for his fine speeches in the Commons, his support of free trade and as Prime Minister in 1868 for his major efforts to help the people of Ireland, plus electoral reforms he pushed through Parliament. |
