The Mechanics Institute was completed in 1880 and served the interests of working men in the days when education ended at age 12. Thereafter each man looked for advancement here, where a small library was built up and his education was through his own efforts.

Nowadays the building is at the centre of most village activities ranging from toddlers to OAPs and from craftwork to coffee mornings having a large public hall on the first floor, library and information centre.
