The Co-operative Society's presence in Great Horton has come to an end. It had begun in Knight's Fold in 1842 where it flourished for several years. A new Co-op was started in the High Street, as this part of Great Horton Road was known, in 1859. New larger premises opened here at Blacksmith's Fold in 1863 with a meeting room on the top floor that could hold 700 people. This was demolished in the 1970's as more severe competition came from supermarket chains. And now competition has killed off the Co-op altogether in the village.
