The Old Bell Chapel on Southfield Lane was the first place of worship to be built in Great Horton in 1806. Before this the congregation would have to walk to Thornton or Bradford. As it was built on land previously used for coal mining building a tower was too hazardous. The inset is a copy of a contemporary line drawing illustrating how the Bell Chapel looked in it's prime. When the village's population exploded it became too small and was replaced by
St. John's Parish Church. [Please go on five pictures for a memory of schooling in Great Horton]
