Leaving the Bell Chapel we cross Southfield Lane to Low Green now built-up but once one of two common "greens" where villagers could graze their sheep as of right. It is a relic of the ancient manorial system, as is Southfield Lane itself. The land of the manor was divided into three open fields ploughed in rotation with cereals, root crops and fallow, often named West- North- or
South Field.
