The Valiant Sailor may look as if it will topple into the street, such is the depth of the jetty to the first floor
[and the trick a wide angle lens plays with the lines]. The original building was a pre-Tudor inn whose
landlord in 1797 changed its name to commemorate the sailor Jack Crawford who nailed the colours to
the remnants of the mast of HMS Venerable at the Battle of Camperdown off the coast of North Holland.
