In 1498 John & Simon Pygot constructed a stand or quay that projected into the river which flowed nearer
St. Margaret's than it does now, and in the 1580's the then owners of Pygot's stand are thought to have built
Marriott's Warehouse [as it was to become] to store corn and salt with a coal store outside. In the 1850's the
Marine Parade was built in front of the warehouses lining the river, later renamed South Quay. The building
is now home to the Green Quay Wash Interpretation Centre, with a shop and cafe.
