 | In the Millfleet Area. I found this fine looking gate between the river and London Road. My search revealed a picture of this gate, the Whitefriars Gateway, on Bryan Howlings very tidy site: http://www.interads.co.uk/~jbh/ "Dating from about 1261, this gateway is all that remains of what was once an extensive friary. The Carmelite mendicants practised great austerity even sleeping in their coffins!" There are streets in the area named All Saints, Carmelite and Whitefriars reflecting the number of priories there was here before the Dissolution.
