During its long life
the Lady Chapel has been through a number of changes of function. Originally
built as
a place of rest for pilgrims, after the Dissolution it was a gunpowder store [as The Mount Fort] during the King's War or the Civil War of 1641-1647, it also served later as a water tower, and before restoration in 1828-1829, as a stable. Request the key at the Tourist Office in the Custom House and explore the monument for yourself. | |||
