An ancient market town with a castle, started in
the reign of Henry I, dominating the river
crossings upstream and down. Now that castle looks out onto one of
Yorkshire's most
beautiful and well-known rail viaducts. The town's linen industry
is history too but
that's not the only thing that brings thousands of visitors here.
The views and walks
are very fine; its buildings varied and on a human scale.
