The city was begun where the wide river
Ouse is joined by the river Fosse as an ideal defensive position, soon becoming
a trading centre and port, important enough to be built up by natives, Romans,
Vikings, the Church and the Kings of England. The river can be friend and an awkward
neighbour as its winter floods attest.
