| The ruin of the Franciscan monastery church still stands
though the monastery itself was almost all destroyed by lightening in 1502. It's
number of friars was increased in 1556 but by 1580 the last friar had left and
it was pulled down. The church had use for worship in 1623 but by the time the
Stadhuis was being restored in 1893-95 it was a stone-cutters yard. After restoration
in 1903 the church was again in use but was abandoned in favour of the Martini
Church by 1970. In 1980 a fire destroyed the ancient building and the reinforced
ruin is preserved and protected as you see now. |
