the earliest times man has struggled to survive in the most unpromising of environments.
The hunter gatherers that began to populate these marshy lands found they could
escape the waters only by building a mound, called a terp, above the marshes.
As time went on more families grouped up to make larger terpen to keep life going.
Here is one of the terpen that make the landscape of Friesland and the
other northern provinces distinct from all the others, and is at the heart of
settlement here. |
