Taking heed of the near disaster a few years ago when the Maas and
Rhine almost breached their dijks, money is being spent along the great
rivers adding flood protection. The green area beyond the shadow of
the bridge, is, I am sure, there to allow the river more space when the
annual snow melt comes down to the densely populated low lands.
