The Polish Airborne had been hacked to pieces by the Germans as
they landed over Driel. The Germans had captured a crashed glider
earlier with a map that gave the time and place of their arrival. What
remained of the Poles fought their way to this ferry and held it long
enough under constant fire for some of the besieged British across
the Neder Rijn at Oosterbeek to swim to safety.
