As the German forces closed in on the beleaguered Airborne trapped in "The Cauldron" around Oosterbeek's Hartenstein Hotel, elements of the Polish Airborne had made a small bridgehead on this dangerous wooded bank. They had come to reinforce the British, but became instead their rescuers.
