The brick built molen van Piet sits on the old city ramparts demolished to make way for expansion and modernisation.

In fact it probably replaces an older wooden mill that would have used the elevation of the ramparts to drive its large sails.

Old prints and paintings often depict city walls with wooden windmills on every bastion. In time of war they would be taken down and stored.
