The Stadhuis' octagonal tower may well have performed the same function as the tower at Hof van Sonoy, i.e. as an external staircase for the Gothic Stadhuis. The top looks to be made of wood in a style like many in Amsterdam.

When the rooms of the Stadhuis are not in use you can make a tour of the building from the rear entrance.
