An old photograph in 'Huizen in Nederland, Friesland en Noord Holland' p41 shows that this house and its neighbours all had shelter canopies jutting from their ground floors. Now a popular restaurant this very large house of 1602 has such a finely decorated gable that would be the pride of any metselaar, or bricklayer, anywhere, anytime. Margreet de Brie uit Haarlem writes: "The canopy is called luifel in Dutch." |
