
To my
mind a roofscape such as this is as valid an indicator of a town's
structure as any scene you could name. It tells you what is not always seen
from the street below about the sheer variety of dwellings and the totality
of adaptations the people have made: it speaks of materials used from the
warm pantiles to the utilitarian asphalt and stone rendering; of flat roofs,
mansard and old steep pitched.
