Every year Alkmaar's other function as the market town of a wide
agricultural area is emphasised when the streets of the town centre
are layered with soil and straw to accommodate the biggest farm show
in the North Holland. Farmers and townies come to see the changing
variety of beasts displayed while farmers vie with one another for the
prize of "Best in Show", at the same time as buying and selling their
stock to other farmers.
