In the C17 protestant Holland was eager to demonstrate its devotion to the ideal
of Calvinism and its shunning of display. Such aphorisms as this one were wide-
spread and widely ignored. The wealthy merchants wives and daughters dressed
in sober colours but still could manage to quietly show off their jewelery of gold or
silver against their simple monochrome clothes.
