The coat of arms of the Snouck van Loosen family
over the centre of their
great house on Dijk facing the Oude Haven. Much of this aristocratic
family's wealth came from the triangular trade that took European goods
to Africa to trade for slaves who were then shipped to the Caribbean islands
to produce the sugar and other tropical goods for the European market.
The English, French, Spanish and Portuguese merchants of the time saw
nothing wrong with this process ~ just the wealth it created.
