Sint Jans Gasthuis was built in 1563 as an almshouse cum hospital, later being used in its present name, De Boterhal or butter market.

All its window openings and doorway are made of stone, each of the steps on the gable are filled with a variety of sculptures and the niche in the centre has a statue of Our Lady.

When it was the gasthuis, beds for its inmates were on the ground floor.
