The facade of No. 1 Kerkstraat with the big fish is also a great example of
kruiskozijn [cruciform] windows; of pilasters and of neck gables. The windows
will be familiar to anyone who has admired Vermeer's interiors, leaded lights
at the top and shutters for the lower part. Practical windows giving privacy with
daylight and protection from the night and weather. Neck gables evolved from
step gables by making the step larger and filling it with sculptures of fish and
cornucopias. Understated extravagance I'd say.
