Winter wheat may not be the only casualty in this harsh land. The homestead here was built
to fulfil the ambitions of some strong hopeful lured here by the low price of land, and with the promise of limitless irrigation water. Whether or not the water came, this land has a bare 10" of normal rainfall, 20" in a bumper year: should two or three poor years come in succession....
